Wiki and collaboration

You have probably heard of a wiki - a website that anybody, or at least many people, can edit.

You probably have a natural, normal, healthy skepticism called WikiWorry. How can it be accurate if anyone can edit it?!

This course will teach you how wiki works, why it is the most powerful tool to enter the tech-activism scene in a long time, and how vandalism can be completely controlled by your group's efforts.

Electronic Witness: Video Police-Watching and Related Activism

Armed with video cameras, audio recorders, and camera-phones, citizens can document police encounters in a way not possible until very recently.

During this session participants will walk through the process of asserting Constitutional and other rights during a police encounter using a video camera, including role-play exercises.

Participants will learn the key points of asserting rights, liberties, and the rule of law as an activist-journalist. Other topics in this presentation include: The future of police-watching, the use of text-messaging as a tool of resistance, and how to reach out to your local police to find common ground.

This session features a multimedia presentation of some of Justin Holmes' police encounters.

Undermining Surveillance

Is your government or campus administration getting a little too cozy with your data or your internet connection?

You'll be happy to know that private data encryption has come of age.

Using an ordinary computer and internet connection, participants will learn about the chief security concerns of today's communications infrastructure, and how to communicate across wide spaces with 100% assurance that only intended recipients can access the message.

SMS / Rapidware

Want to set up a police watch in your community? You'll need to know the intimate aspects of SMS - the text messaging system that cell phones use.

This program will help you deploy and administer all the tools you'll need to rapidly distribute a message to your group.
